“The purpose of meditation is to cultivate those states of mind that are conducive to peace and well-being, and to eradicate those that aren’t.”
Meditation has taken me from ordinary wellness to optimal wellness, from stress to calm. It was the missing piece that fit perfectly into my strategy to build my strongest, best self. The Universe sought to teach me about it when I was at my weakest. Now that I have become a student of meditation, I want you to know how this practice will transform your life and wellness, for the better.
I have been on a journey to repair my wellness over the last five years. What I was looking for was peace of mind, a way to quiet my monkey brain, as I dealt with the mountain of loss that began when my stepson died, continued through Robert’s death and ultimately the collapse of the family business, my financial health and all that I had known with Robert. This in a short five years!
Although I had been well disciplined in the healthy lifestyle habits of Eating Clean® and exercising, I hadn’t realized my strategy was flawed. I was trying to be well but hadn’t taken care of my emotional health. I didn’t even know how.
According to the World Health Organization, wellness is the “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence.” World Health Organization
I was missing the critical component of emotional wellness, which was apparent because I wasn’t sleeping, became distant, angry, and unable to eat or make meaningful connections, even with family. I was spiraling hard. I was in trouble.
My yoga teacher, Angelika from YogaOne, noticed and suggested I attend her M3 class – Meditation, Manifestations and Miracles. What I found, after learning the humbling lessons of how to still my mind, was as big a paradigm shift for my health, as when I discovered Eating Clean as a 204-pound overweight woman. IT CHANGED MY LIFE!
Meditation delivers benefits no one should be without. According to Deepak Chopra, acclaimed author and alternative wellness expert, these benefits include:
• Relief from stress and anxiety (meditation mitigates the effects of the “fight-or-flight” response, decreasing the production of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline)
• Decreased blood pressure and hypertension
• Lower cholesterol levels
• More efficient oxygen use by the body
• Increased production of the anti-aging hormone DHEA
• Restful sleep
Science has further found that meditation restores the brain by helping people feel calmer. But the brain also underwent chemical changes that improved memory, empathy, sense of self, and stress regulation.
Check, check and check. Once I started meditating, the negative impact of my heavily stressful life situation, felt manageable. I could once again sleep, eat and be fully present in life. Finding the quiet also helped me find answers.
Just 15 minutes of quiet mindfulness a day, spent in meditation, can restore a world of negativity. Nothing could be easier to accomplish. Sit quietly, in a calm space and release. It has changed my life so much that I wouldn’t consider doing any creative work, like writing this blog, without meditating first.
I invite you to try. Click here for a free meditation by one of my favourite persons to offer guided meditations, Abraham Hicks. This is a general well being meditation.
Note that if you are new to meditation, you will find it hard to avoid your busy brain. Do the meditation anyway, as each time you do, you are developing your meditation muscles. It will come.
Warmly and with best wishes for your wellness,
