Sun Protective Factor Awareness – Sun’s Out, SPF On!

What’s all the fuss about sunscreen?  What number SPF should we wear and when?  Is sun bad or good?  How often do I need to apply sunscreen? What if I work out or swim – do I need to reapply or use a specific kind of sunscreen?  I am fair, what is the best sunscreen for me?

So many questions!!

The sun is both a friend, if we respect its’ power, and a foe, if we aren’t sunscreen savvy.  Sometimes it’s as simple as Eating Clean®, the lifestyle way of eating I founded that manages weight and wellness holistically and can boost the body’s natural sun protective forces. And sometimes we need a little help from Rexall and their vast array of clean sunscreen products.

The more we load ourselves with nutrients, the better the skin can protect us from potential sun damage.  A diet rich in clean foods including healthy fats, plenty of lean protein and an abundance of fruits and vegetables, gives us the best chance to create healthy skin and the proper defence against the most harmful rays of the sun, UV or ultraviolet rays.

Food plays a stunning role in either weakening or strengthening the skin’s ability to protect against harm from the sun. Refined foods, particularly sugars and refined grain carbohydrates, rob our organs, including the skin – the biggest organ of them all  –  of valuable minerals, particularly chromium and selenium. Mineral oxides absorb and filter UVA and UVB, reducing the amount of UVR that penetrates the layers of the skin. Without these minerals, the skin loses some of its’ ability to properly protect against the sun’s rays.

Our friends at Rexall provide a host of supplements and products with sun protection awareness in mind, and not a minute too late as the warmer weather is upon us.

One you should definitely stock up on is Vitamin C. It’s not just for colds.  Most dermatologists and virtually every other kind of doctor will tell you that Vitamin C is essential for skin because of its’ natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But it can also de-pigment skin – think brown age spots – and boosts collagen formation.  According to Dr. Zamani, an oculoplastic surgeon and aesthetic doctor, “Vitamin C can even boost your sunscreen protection factor” in your skin.

Rexall’s mineral supplements are of superior quality.  Be.Better minerals and supplements are naturally derived, with no synthetic ingredients. Boost your natural sunscreen protective factors with Be.Better Selenium, Chromium and Zinc.

Further boost your natural sun protection abilities with my Eat Your Sunscreen Smoothie Recipe.  A blender full of nutrients including antioxidants, healthy fats and vitamins like B and C, plus minerals chromium, zinc and selenium, yield an array of sun protective power.  While you are sipping on that delightful concoction, be sure to double on sun protection with Be.Better Sunscreen Spray Wet – SPF 50 and Be.Better Sunscreen Face – SPF 30.

Visit Rexall’s website for more information about sun protection.  The table describing skin types and reaction to sun’s rays is highly informative!
